In The Darkness, Anything Could Happen

This post is about a social/political issue. If you want to skip it, just listen to the song and move on.

Three people in my life have shared with me that they've had at least one abortion in their life.

[Pause]

And those are just the ones who have shared that information.

A high school friend shared this blog post on Facebook. I encourage you to read it. The rest of this post will seem like painful wax poetic if you don't (although, it still might... but I'm taking back my blog!).

I, too, have gone through an evolution on this subject of abortion. Through second-hand experience and gut feeling. I've shamefully, ignorantly,  had visceral hate towards both sides of the argument in my life.

But I can say that from the people I've known ... that this isn't a straight line issue. My friends were all different (in location, age, socioeconomic status, spirituality, etc.), but they all had emotional trauma leading up to an abortion. They've all not been loved well. They aren't accepted and they don't accept themselves. There's always discouragement.

My friend's histories are complex and the reasons may vary, but there is one consistent thing missing: love. Or if you're not into that, at least compassion.

As long as this issue is too taboo for the reasonable and too easy a joust for the extreme, nothing will be brought to light to address the wellness of its victims

And in the darkness, anything could happen.

Oh We Got Trouble With (a) Capital Confusion

Trying not to lose my head but I have never been this scared before
Tell you what I'll do instead, lay my body down on the floor
To forget what I've done, silhouette til the good lord come
All we know is distance
We're close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
Trying not to lose your own, boxing up everything, you've got
All you ever knew of home, you're scared scared to see
Your mother there in the door, you wonder where did the years go
All we know is distance
We're close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
But this is how the story ends
Or have we just begun
To kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
The violins make no sound
And I begin to feel the ground
All we know is distance
We're close and then we run
Kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
But this is where the story ends
Or have we just begun
To kiss away the difference
I know you hate this one
Song Suggestion: Where the Story Ends by The Fray

For the self-titled album by the The Fray, the song above is one of the less somber sounding. It starts with a good cymbal beat and perking teeth-tickling (the ivories, the keys).

Anyone else feeling overdue for the election?

 (murmors in the crowd)

Hell. I can't even listen to some piano rock without it glazing my interpretation of the music.

Hell. Even Time magazine is spinning on it's desk chair and clicking the print button 3 times too many:

They have me asking, literally, "Which way's up?"

Hell.

When I was in high school I was in theatre. During dress rehearsal week of the 5th production of my 7-production-career I had a melt down. Crying in the hallway outside the cafeteria. Just overload. So ready to freaking give birth to the anticipated event that I started making mistakes. One too many sashays to the left. A beat too late on "right here in River City".

I feel that's how we are, as a nation, now. People are retracing the baseboard next to the yellow wallpaper of their beliefs. And we're wearing a hole in the floorboards people. We're losing site of how we even got in the attic.

Take heart, my fellow Unionites!

The eve of our greatest relief is upon us. In a few short/long days we'll be done with Obama-Romma-Drama and onto reporting Honey Boo-Boo's new line of wheeled sneakers called "Go-Go-Boo-Shoes."

So look forward to the new glitter-n-belly flesh-toned shoes for toddlers. But in the mean time, don't forget to sashay over to the polls and vote right here in River City.

Tipsy Tuesday: Waiting for Home Delivery

Waiting for something to be delivered can be a pain. It's as convenient as waiting for the cable guy or a plumber. They give you a 4 hour window and then show up 20 minutes after the 4 hour window closes. OR if you are there for the majority of the time, they will show up during the 5 minutes you were in the shower or out back or, in my case, taking a jog around the block.

Murphy wrote a loophole-less law, right there.

So I've compiled a list of things to do at home while you are imprisoned by in-home delivery/service.

  1. Dust the baseboards. If you have pets, this is something that should be done regularly.
  2. Prepare and cook an elaborate meal for dinner (something like this).
  3. Do some laundry.
  4. Scold the pets for things they probably do every day but you aren't around to see them do it. (Pet shaming, anyone?)
  5. Hand mop the bedroom floor in preparation for placement of a fancy-schmancy rug.
  6. Do not attempt to place the rug yourself because it's a 9x12 rug wooly beast that will crush you.
  7. Run a short run. But run hard to compensate for your limited time. Then come home and do your very first pushup... ever.
  8. Feel proud of yourself. And then ashamed that it was your first pushup ever. #ProudAshamed
  9. Dance around to T.I. Wonder if he's still in prison. Wonder if the neighbors can see you dancing around to T.I. Move further from the windows.
  10. Shower a quick shower for fear that you'll miss the delivery guy.
  11. Continually look out of the peephole without prompt.
Through the peephole.

A preview of our bedroom. iPhone photos don't do the blue justice!

Ok, ok. This is just a list of what I've done today. Oh, and I worked a bit too.

Beverage pairing: Water after the run/dance party. Wine with the braised pork.
Song Suggestion: What You Know About That by T.I.

Tipsy Tuesday: Labor(ious) Day Weekend

Preparing to move.

Preparing to not-want-to move.

Boxes for sale, boxes for sale.
Seriously, anyone in Chicago need moving supplies, these are professional grade and come with packing  paper below. Over $300 worth of supplies for just $50. Leave a comment or message me for deets.

The paper made nice rosettes.

Home Depot is thrilling now.

The first thing to unpack: barcart materials. And I really enjoyed styling it (this was a before picture).

Moving advice: Hire professionals to do the heavy lifting AND deep cleaning, if you can. Movers were expensive, but we saved our backs and have most of the house unpacked in record time. We did the packing ourselves to save some money. We probably couldn't get friends to move us if we tried. Our friends are just getting too wise to be bought with pizza and beer.

We decided to have cleaners come into our new place before we moved in. Long story short, we (and I mean "I") had to clean our rental when we moved out to get our deposit back. The sellers of our new place did not have to do any cleaning whatsoever. Needless to say, we would have had to deep clean two places in a matter of hours to be able to move. I've never hired professional cleaners, so I was feeling like a failure. But I was going bonkers and getting raw hands from all of the scrubbing, so we got an excellent rate on some lovely cleaning ladies. They came at 7:45 PM and stayed until the job was done. They were outstanding. We got all of our deposit back from the rental and now just have to worry about keeping our owned home as spotless as the pros left it.

Song suggestion: The Outer Banks by The Autumn Leaf. I'm listening to it to see if it can bring back my post-facial calm. Light some candles with it too, folks. It's a gem.

Beverage pairing: Tons of water. Moving (junk food, living out a of suitcase), this heat, celebratory wine and stress have left my skin less than stellar. I just had a facial about a week ago and I already look like a leper. Gotta rehydrate and plump out my face again.

Ode to the CTA

(To the tune of Oh Christmas Tree)

O' Chicago Transit Authority
You pick me up and transport me
To work, the gym and back again
In theory you are a useful friend.
O' Chicago Transit Authority
Connecting me and my city.

On the Brown line I used to ride
Douchebags, Woo-girls by my side.
Weilding coffee, Kindles, pills
to cut the edge off last night's thrills.
The Brown line serves only trendy parts
but still smells like old booze and farts.

Sometimes on the Red I'd be
to play guitar or go shopping.
It stops at Cubs and White Sox fields
Ride during games? There's no appeal
Sticky, it sees the most vomit
I'll believe Rahm when they upgrade it

To the Orange line I moved
Where laborin' Mexicans were rarely rude
but school kids, Asians and Polish
are loud and rarely speak English.
It was the furthest south we've stayed
and now we're glad to go away.

Yellow...
[elevator music]
Nobody takes yellow.

The Pink line I don't often pick
cause riders are either docs or sick.
They wear their scrubs even though I've read
that they should change so germs don't spread.
Though passengers have smarts and wealth
I question their handle on public health.

The Purple line is just for 'burbs
and Northwestern wildcat nerds.
Some commute from Evanston
but forget post-work drinks and fun.
For if you miss the last train out,
you will sleep on someone's couch.

To get to work I take the Green
Take today for a typical scene.
A man enjoys a 12 piece, thighs
Wheezy ring tone, a baby cries
Nearly everyone's annoying me
my senses need a coronary.

Soon on the Blue we will commute
the most crowded silver bullet shoot
With doors that barely open still
and hipsters with ironic smells
I think we can exchange fair cards
for tat's, piercings and PBRs.

O' Chicago Transit Authority
You pick me up and transport me
To work, the gym and back again
In theory you are a useful friend.
O' Chicago Transit Authority
Connecting me and my city.

Flip-It Friday: Get This Party Started

Let's start off with a song suggestion to make sure you don't get that awful P!NK song stuck in your head:

Gavin DeGraw, Sweeter
The video is kinda silly, so ignore that.

If you have to watch a video, watch this one. The song is good, but look at those dogs! (Thanks for the tip on Shovels and Rope, dad.)

This morning when I came into work, I was drag-ass tired. Asleep on my feet. Now I'm still tired, but more awake because:

The office toaster caught on fire. On fire. And it was funny.

I'm not a sadist, but after I realized that no one was going to get hurt, the 4 of us that were in the kitchen were cracking up. I mean, who goes to make a bagel and has to navigate some 2 foot tall flames to unplug a wayward toaster. 'Twas just what I needed to get this day started. A bit of perspective. Some action. But mostly humor.

Last night we went to see the new Batman movie. Totes good, but I had a hard time understanding Bane's garbled voice. Maybe I am just old.

Days of house shopping (and related paperwork) and eating dinner at 9:30 has me over-tired. I'm looking forward to going to my parent's house this weekend and getting some family time in while relaxing.

So tell me, what has you going today? What do you do to keep yourself plugging away at life? Not that you intentionally set fire to things to spice it up... or do you?

(Pre)Friday Flip-It: Taco Supreme Court Ruling: Nacho Grandma's Healthcare

What do you call cheese that doesn't belong to you?

... Nacho cheese!

Heyo! (Does that give the title some context?)

I can't wait until Friday to flip-it on you guys. Tell me: What do you think about the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the new proposed healthcare law?

Comment below with:
- Your health insurance status (have vs. not-have)
- Your political views (if you're comfortable sharing them - I showed you mine, remember?)
- How you currently pay for healthcare/how much you need (i.e. Are you chronically sick?)

Aaaand to lighten it up, here's Katy Perry:

I can't say what it is. I think it's her low female voice (a contralto, Wikipedia says). I won't read Twilight, The Hunger Games or finish the Harry Potter series, but I will watch Katy on YouTube... on repeat. There you have it, I'm a book snob but a chick-pop junkie.

Also an update on the hair. Here's day 2 of the Keratin Treatment:

I wrapped it up last night to shower, but was still worried about the humidity in the shower frizzing it out. I blew it out with a hair dryer for about a minute just to make sure that it was totally dry. This morning I combed it slightly and ran out the door.

Flip-It Friday: How Do You Make Up?

"We fight we break up we kiss me make up..."

You tell 'em Katy Perry.

So how do you make up?

Do you apologize first? Do you always require an apology (not a bad thing, I think)? Do you act like nothing was ever wrong and just move past it? Do you have a drag-out-drawn-out discussion over the matter until everything's out on the table? Do you have a song-fight like Katy in the video?

I'm more of a bullet-points-on-the-issue-only-please and lets-get-this-over-with-and-go-eat-dinner kinda person.

You?

(I can't believe I've blogged about Katy Perry more than once... her name is a tag option!)

Tipsy Tuesday: Spring Has Sprung [A leak in my dreams]

Hello tropical babes!

Chicago in March. Usually cold(er) ammaright? It's no news and it's not a bad thing... but some of it's side effects are.

Although spring is here (as.of.today.), we usually don't feel it this strongly (80 degrees today? WTF?). The warm weather and sunshine are bringing on some unwanted conditions. Here's a list of things that are ahead of their season and ruining my day.

1) Seasonal allergies. Or pollution. Either way my eyes are red and itchy, my nose is both clogged and runny (how?!), and I have a headache from the aforementioned ailments.

Solution: Neti pot, Zyrtec and coffee. The neti clears the yeti our of your sinuses, Zyrtec is the only allergy med that works for me and coffee assures that my headache is not due to withdraw :)
Hi. I'm a furry yeti. Your sinuses are my spring break vacation home.

2) Ants. Holy raisins on a celery stick, they're here. We're on the 2nd story of a 3-flat and somehow it feels like our unit is directly INSIDE an ant hill. It starts with just a few, but you know once you see them it's too late. They're everywhere.

Solution: Mix water, sugar and ant killer (or borax, like this recipe) and let the ants eat/carry the poison back to the nest. Then call an exterminator because nothing will kill these things short of a Ghostbuster or Frollo wielding a cathedral stone in the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Minute 3:47

3) Hair frizz. I thought I would get a few more weeks out of my do before having to perma-tape it to my scalp. Alas, summer temps and humidity are upon us.

Solution: A good serum and a hair cut. The cut keeps the ends of your hair from frizzing more than normal and the serum helps your cuticle lie-down like a good dog. I got my hair trimmed last weekend at the Aveda Institute and have been using this serum for a few months now and love it. Unlike Moroccan Oil, this stuff is light on my thin hair. I can still wait days to wash my hair as this stuff isn't greasy. It helps my hair dry quickly so I'm not spending a long time under a hair dryer. I think it also helps to straighten my hair.

Anyone else strugglin' with early on-set allergies, ants or frizz? What are your solutions? What else is surprising you this spring?

And for those of you who get a spring break - how's it going? What are/were your plans? I don't get a spring break, but I did get to see some awesome lovelies this weekend - my friends Becca & Mike and my sister & bro-in-law. Both couples have a 1-yr-old and are expecting their 2nd child. How serendipitous? My nephew, btw, knows how to fist-bump now. You just say "give me knucks" and he puts his tiny fits out and pounds it. So awesome. What's not so awesome is that his fine motor skills now include smacking you in the face. The terrible 2's are still a few months off. Hold tight, son.

Tipsy Tuesday: Vacation and Travel

I spent the past few days in Nicaragua [San Juan Del Sur] with my husband and 2 friends. Have a look and be jealous!

Tip One: Wear Sunscreen. And when that doesn't work, sit in the shade.

Tip Two: Take time to stop and smell the sunset. I love this photo of a woman doing her sun salutation yoga as the sun in setting.

Tip Three: Don't forget to take photos of people as well as landscapes.

Tip Four: Detox when you get back. Raw vegan for me this time around.

I'm not the best person to give vacation advice. I've learned through the years that I don't travel well and am still negotiating the best way to take a vacation (travel, stay-cation, short-stay, desert/mountain/warm/cold?).

Can I tell you something, friends? I have some guilt about vacation. I feel like I don't "do" vacation well and that's both sad for me and frustrating for those I'm with. There were a series of factors I could blame (sun poisoning, a few bumps to the head while surfing, my digestive system getting out of whack every-single-time, or the lack of alone time), but I wonder if I am just missing whatever it is that makes people enjoy travel. The perfect storm of fun-loving people and fresh experiences still can't pull me from my funk about it.

I love time off of work. I love seeing new things. I love eating fun food. I also love coming back to my familiar home and be able to do things the way I'm used to.

I read about vacation depression here. Basically, if you take a trip that doesn't align with your personality, it can cause more stress than stress-relief. I don't think that this applies to me since I don't see a pattern for the types of vacations that stress me out. The only common denominator for my travel is me ... and that makes it all the more embarrassing.

What about you all? Do you struggle with travel at all? Have any of you had the 'perfect vacation' that just blew all other trips out of the water?

You are also free to comment and tell me I'm straight-trippin', boo.

Tipsy Tuesday: Valentines Day Recovery / Water Changes Everything

Today is my Friday because tomorrow (on a 5:30 AM flight - gulp!) I leave for Nicaragua with some fun people. Oh and my husband's coming too. Ha!

Some remedies to recover from typical Valentines-ness.

Problem: Too much chocolate/ too many conversation hearts
Solution: Be satisfied. You ate all that crap, you should at least enjoy it :) Then brush your tooth-sweaters and be sure to flush it down with tons of water

Problem: Too much champagne on Valentines night
Solution: Sleep late, wear an eye mask, take a salt-bath and drink tons of water. Or have a bloody mary.

Problem: You got a large stuffed animal for V-day
Solution: Put him on the floor of your closet and make him the butler of your shoes. Name him Harold. But not really "Harold" cause that's the name of my closet shoe butler.

Problem: You don't have a traditional Valentine.
Solution: Make googly eyes at everyone until someone stares back. Then reel 'em in with a curling-come-hither-finger. Or... I'm your Valentine ;)

Problem: You do have a Valentine, but they forgot your gift
Solution: Let it go today, but bring it up at their birthday. "What? You wanted a birthday present? Well I thought it wouldn't be fair for me to be 2-up on you, so I just am going to lay low until I get that 2012 V-day gift. You're welcome."
Source: vulture.com via Jill on Pinterest

Problem: Your Valentine wants to take you to dinner but you didn't wash your hair this week and you have to get up early tomorrow.
Solution: Tell them the truth. And then when they mumble 'bullsh*t' give them the googly eyes from the "don't have a traditional Valentine?" solution. They'll either think you're interested in skipping dinner or just plain crazy. Either way, you'll get out of dinner.

Problem: One in eight people in the world don't have access to clean water.
Solution: charity:water. Donate to the site in honor of my 26th birthday, here! We're halfway to our goal, loved ones! Let's keep going ask my birthday is a month an a half away.

How to Enter Modern Day Survival Mode/Advice I'm Giving Myself

The modern woman worker adult person sometimes just has to pull up their britches and keep on trucking. We often get overstimulated rather than under and let me tell ya, it's overwhelming.

Survival mode: Being so bogged down with stuff to do that one has to trim the fat in their day and decide what really needs to be done. Out of the options of fight or flight, put up your dukes.

Some of you might know this as "finals week", "end of the quarter", "the publication goes live in x hours", "grades are due", "the G8 is coming to Chicago", "callbacks" or  "sh*t hit the fan".

All Photos via Pinterest.

I've been busy lately. I've picked/torn/filed off all of my nails (after just painting them this past weekend!) from writer's block. We've had leftovers for dinner (which usually are only reserved for lunch) even though we have many fresh-meal options. I am only running a fraction of what I aspire to each day.

So how do we survive it all?

Here are my tips for surviving survival mode, keeping your friends/family and not looking homeless while doing it.

Health and Beauty Maintenance

- Stretch your hairstyles. Wash as little as possible and look up fun ways to do a bun to save you time in the morning. Say hello to more sleep.
- Don't get down on yourself if you don't stick to your usual workout routine. As long as you get moving everyday, let that be enough. Sometimes your time cannot be stretched. Let is go and catch up on the treadmill time after your deadline.
- Wear your glasses. Hide the eye-bags.
- Have a week's worth of work outfits ready in case you sleep in. You can still get dressed in the dark/with your eyes closed when you know what pants/shirt/socks go together. Plus, this will keep you from making a game-time decision to put on a "desperation outfit". You know you've had one.
- Keep a pair of nude/black/neutral shoes at your desk. I used to tote my shoes back and forth to work since I use public transit and commute in flats/Merrells Mary Janes. Now I keep all of my non-flashy pumps at work. I have an entire shoe drawer and I'm so lucky to have it.
- Get enough sleep. If you're stuck on a problem, go to bed if you can. Chances are you'll have fresh eyes and a clear head in the morning.

Friend and Family Maintenance

- Think twice before emailing/calling/texting. You're in survival mode and what comes out of your mouth might not be what you really mean. Think things through twice and even ask a 3rd party if what you're saying makes sense. You can always say "I'll get back to you" and think it through when you have a chance to slow down.
- Keep the appointments you've made, but make no more. You don't want to appear anti-social and you also don't want to keep piling on the obligations. Freeze your Calendar.
- Look a week/month ahead to see where birthdays are coming up. Use Facebook or your mom's memory to help you get them all mapped out now. Use an online service to help you send a card - at least - or have your significant other/roommate/mom remind you.

Media Maintenance

- Turn the TV off. Just do it.
- If you are chewing off your fingernails in frustration, try putting on some mellow music. Distract the immediate (medical term, I'm sure) part of your brain so that your deeper conscious can sort through a problem. I guess it works in classrooms too. Might I suggest Ron Pope's "Shoot Out The Lights".
- Close your email, turn off your phone. If you don't need these two things for the task at hand, then they are distractions just laying-in-wait. Give yourself a window of time when you can check them both and then turn them back off/log out.

Head/Heart Maintenance

- Be kind to yourself. Reward yourself for milestones or the job completion. Let yourself have a treat, but be wary about making food a reward. You're not running as much as you should, remember? Choose a low-cal popcorn, one piece of candy, as much sugar-free tea as you like, allow yourself to buy that book on Amazon, spend too much money on a candle at Anthropologie (it smells like "good boy"!), or just take a break and walk around in the fresh air.

Then get back to work.

Ok, long winded. Now you tell me. What do you do when in survival mode?

Flip It Friday: NYR Music

Now for a lighter FIF: Your New Years Resolution Music. NPR is calling all dont-quit-your-day-job DJs to make the ultimate playlist.

2-fold question: What is your NYR and what song(s) will help you accomplish this?

For instance, if you want to lose weight, what songs would help keep you jogging? If you want to cook at home more, what songs will inspire you? If you want to be sure to return all emails on time, what songs do you listen to at work.

Like a beverage pairing, but with music.

Mine
NYR: to "go" 5 miles a week. Sounds weak, but I am not athletic, so to run/walk/bike/dance/shop for 5 miles is an attainable but inspiring goal.
Bev pairing: water to hydrate after a workout.
Song suggestion: I'm Not Your Boyfriend Baby by 3Oh3 (Warning: Most of my workout music is explicit. What can I say, the beats are good.)

Go For Broke but Don't Go Broke For the Holidays

money money money mon-ey ... Mo-NEE!

Geepers. S and I have put our wallets on lock-down as of yesterday until our budget starts over next month. We have to make it 9 more days without any noticeable purchases. (Can we do it?!)

Between holiday gift$, the turkey and trimming$, entertaining friend$, the mo$t awe$ome cu$tom card$, and needing/wanting new pant$, we/I have tapped the budget and then $ome.

Granted, I got a wee bit of a raise when I was promoted, but not enough to justify all this over-spending. Where did I go wrong??

Custom cards, a fresh, local turkey and new pants were really the only splurges. But I have excuses for all of that:

1) This is the only appropriate time to use wedding/engagement photos in card-form. If I don't stomp on this milestone this year, I never can!
2) This may be the only Thanksgiving I host so I need to make it wow-ser.
3) And well, I am popping buttons on my old pants and am upgrading from hand-me-downs.

Ok, ok. Calm down mom and dad. We are still meeting all of our basic needs, paying all of our bills, and still contributing to savings. All's well.

So let's explore where we went right:

1) Use coupons/Groupons/sales to shop for gifts. I was able to use a coupon on like 80% of our gifts for family this year and the rest were on sale/discount. Fives.
2) Splurge on only some things (the turkey).
3) When entertaining, go pot-luck! Even our Thanksgiving dinner is going to be a group effort.
4) We're spending inside of our means. No lay-away, no credit card bills larger than our checking account balance, no opening up new lines of credit, no black-Friday plans to buy electronics we don't need (cough cough, S, cough cough).
5) Eat leftovers! To make room for all of the Thanksgiving food and all of the Thanksgiving leftovers, eat what you have now. Oh and leftover make great lunches, so pack your lunch.

What are you doing to financially survive the holidays?
Have you found Black Friday deals for which you were glad to get up at 3 AM?
I am seriously curious.

Flip-It Friday: Dirty Little (wedding) Secret

So I was reading on Green Wedding Shoes about this cute lil couple who wed in sunny Cali-forn-i-a.

At the end of each GWS feature wedding, the blog features a bit o' advice from the couple to help those who are still in wedding purgatory. Their advice? Gem-rific.

"The dirty little secret about wedding planning is that couples fight! I was so embarrassed and disillusioned when Nick and I disagreed on our invitations but when I confided in my friend she said, “Oh my god, we fought about everything!” I was so relieved! Planning the wedding became a great opportunity to learn more about each other and we grew as a couple in the process. So my advice is to go ahead and fight! ;)"

Ah-ha!

I may be video obsessed, but it's a good way to give you a dose of music with a dash of relevance. This one's an acoustic to not rock your world too hard in the AM. Sorry for the double AAR this week... they are just speaking to me.

So what's your wedding advice to me?

Another whiny emo song suggestion? Back Home by Yellowcard. I'm regressing in music taste this week(end).

Happy Friday. Make the most of your weekend even if that means staying in bed!
