Tipsy Tuesday: You Gotta Be Cotton Me?!

Buh-dum-kish!

Our second wedding anniversary is just weeks away and the traditional gift is... Cotton!

I love the theme (although I didn't follow it last year and gave him a bowl made of glass from our wedding site), so I've compiled some cotton gifts.

Lace shoes

Funky quilt for spare room

Oil on canvas

Natural pillow

Funny tea towel

The non-traditional gift for second anniversaries is china. What do you think? Would you give something completely different?

Don't Call The Serbian Orchestra A Mariachi

The salon where I got my hair cut recently serves wine and beer in addition to the traditional choices of water, tea or coffee. I have water in my glass. Truth be told, I just wanted to use the glass.

I'm fairly certain that the salon was only slightly decked out for Halloween. There was a zombie baby sitting on a bench near me while I was getting my hair did. The stylist told me that the  blue, wild-eyed, infant with bones poking through his skin was a permanent fixture of the salon, not a seasonal delight.

I do believe these are seasonal, though.

Sarah at Twisted Scissors did a great job with the new haircut.

Then my MIL came into town and we headed to Merrillville, IN for this little diddy.

The Mr.'s cousin got married. We were seated at an eclectic table and were the only ones not familiar with Serbian wedding traditions.

A brash woman explaining to us about the use of guns in celebration.
An old man who introduced himself as both "Ed" and "Ron" and would correct you with the other name when addressed.
A cop taught us how to smuggle open containers of wine home in our car... and swiped them from the head table for us!
All of them not shy in booing off the maid of honor when her speech dragged on or smacking the table a bit too loudly (picture bouncing silverware) when joke was made about someone's dancing.

In other words, my kinda people.

Maybe I'm Serbian?

Sorry I'm Not Sorry

Wedding date

Wedding dates

Not my dates, but would gladly be on the arm of either

Not my date, but my sister (sorta like a date... only we call them "Darinas")

She had a baby 4 months ago, people!

Stopped at the World's Largest Truck Stop.

After eating dumplings, fried chicken, roadside food and drinking sweet local wine, we needed a homemade V8 reboot. All of this got juiced.

Started packing glassware in the kitchen. This is only part of it.

This is another part of it... and there's still more. We are definitely purging some of this.

Came into the office today to find my artwork on the floor. Boo. I'm a terrible picture hanger. And people need to walk more softly.

How was your weekend? Your Monday/Tuesday?

Yesterday I had another workout session with my friend B.Lill, a personal trainer, and this time I can move my arms post-push-up! I may someday be able to do a real push-up! She's good people. She worked me hard enough that I knew I burned some calories and pushed myself, but not so hard that I feel lousy or defeated. Need a trainer in the Chi-area? Let me know!

Tipsy Tuesday: Whip It Good in the FP

My dear friend (and recently married woman), Chelsey asked me about the ways I use my food processor. She and her husband were rounding out their registry and Mr. Chelsey thought that an FP was unnecessary... pft!

Poor Chels was using an old blender (or was it an old FP) that didn't have a lid (messy) and smoked when she ran it too long (unsafe, smelly).

(swirly dreamlike holographic kaleidoscopic whatsits wisk you away to the land of FP.)

Something like this:

via

Welcome to Food Processor Land. Where everything is possible as long as it fits into a 13 cup basin.

First possibility: Hummus. Chelsey has made this in an FP before, so maybe she'll comment and give us her recipe

My favorite food processor product? Pesto!

I've made pea pesto, Mulit-herb pesto, regular basil pesto and other veggie sauces in mine. All of them are fantastic when mixed into some carbs. Mmmm nap.

Here's my favorite pesto's ingredients (the pea kind)in order of quantity:

Pea Pesto:
Peas
Basil (dried can work here because its not the main ingredient)
Parmesan
Olive Oil (a good one... you wont be cooking it so the flavors must be top)
Nuts of any kind (traditional pesto uses pine nuts, but I've used walnuts before)
Freshly cracked pepper (and some red pepper flake if you're feeling spicy.)
Salt

Dump all into a processor (minus the oil) and start to pulse/blend. Add the oil through the spout at the top in a thin stream. One mistake of pesto-making is adding the oil at the start - the basil and peas have moisture too and can get the sauce going on their own. You add too much oil at the beginning and you end up making your pasta too heavy. Pour in enough oil to just combine the sauce, but not make it runny. Put the sauce over hot pasta and mix. If it's too sticky, add some of the cook water from the pasta to thin. Refrain from adding more oil. (Did I stress that enough?)

Here's a portion of some pea pesto with roasted cherry tomatos and seared scallops.

Via my Pinterest.

FP's can give you drinks too - but be wary of the liquid. Blenders may make a better bet for drinks because their basins are tall and slender and more likely to contain your juices.

But.

I made a smoothie in my FP and it worked out fine.

Smoothie:
Blueberries
Frozen Strawberries
Orange juice

Dump, whirl, pour and sip.

And if you must abide by the rules of Tipsy Tuesday, I'm sure this smoothie would be great with some vodka, rum or even some champagne (frozen champagne drink... it could work, right?).

Common Sense on a Blogroll Wednesday: It's not a Wedding Proposal, It's a Marriage Proposal

A cute NY blog called Cup of Jo featured this article on a special marriage proposal. Problem? She called it a wedding proposal.

Pleeeze, people. Marriage and weddings do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. People can have a marriage without a wedding and, sadly, people can have a wedding without ever really participating in a marriage.

I Googled the difference between a marriage and a wedding. Top rated answer on Yahoo answers (funny that I Google and got Yahoo...) was: a wedding lasts a day and a marriage lasts a lifetime.

Well put.

I wish them a happy marriage.

Wednesday's Common Sense on a Blog Roll: Wedding Common Sense

I know, I know. I've neglected you. I've missed some important blog dates and I'm sure that all of my adoring fans have left me for other sarcastic blogs in my vein of thought. Le sigh.

I have a good excuse! I got married on Friday to, well, a boy and then took a few days off after an open house and baby baptism to recoup and try and sleep through the night. We're still working on all of those fronts.

Today's common sense inspiration comes to us via The Offbeat Bride Blog.

The Offbeat Bride has given us some brill common sense when it comes to pulling off a wedding. Some tips that I can add are:

- Pick people to help you execute ideas that are self-starters and don't need a lot of hand-holding (Thanks to my independent peeps: Mekey, Bebe, Emily, Chelsey, Kay, my mom, my mom-in-law, etc...)

- Take a few days off around your wedding. I know, this act means you are succumbing to the ridiculousness of weddings and letting them dictate your time (or lack thereof), but why not take an extra day to get your nails done and pamper yourself... or run around like a chicken with your head cut off trying to do some last minute gift wrapping or pillow sham shopping... your choice.

- Take no one's advice. Everyone has an opinion. Screw 'em (yes, that includes me... but don't screw me... I'm married...). Someone's "must have" is another person's "can't afford" so tell everyone to take a hike and do it your way. Or your parents way. Or your inlaws way. Cause really, some weddings are more about the families than the bride and groom anyway.

They had a ring BEAR!

Check out The Offbeat Bride for some hope when it comes to wedding b-sh*t. I love this blog because they are wedding-centered without being traditional (all the time anyway), closed-minded, expected or downright crazy. Weddings can be wonderful or they can be... well, nevermind.

Oh, and did I mention they swear?

Ten Tips Tuesday: Ways to Make Your Partner Feel Special for $5 or Less

In case you haven't heard I haven't blogged enough about it, I'm getting married on Friday.

(squeal, balloon pops, comedic tumble down the stairs, other series of slapstick radio sound effects.)

Clears throat

Where was I? Oh yes...

1) Flowers. Cliche? Everyone likes 'em.

2) Buy them their favorite coffee beverage and write a love note on the side (make sure the baristas leave room after putting a huge L for "latte" and N for "non-fat".

3) In the words of Adam Sandler you could "even let [them] hold the remote control."
C'mon. Don't make them watch the NCIS marathon with you.

4) Know their least favorite household chore and do it for them.

5) Swipe a pair of their well-loved shoes and have them shined/buffed (or DIY) in a 24 hour turn around to avoid "honey, have you see my XYZ pair of shoes?"

6) Write an encouraging message on the bathroom mirror in dry erase marker.

7) Show up at their work (preferably when you know they aren't swamped) just to say hi or meet them at the end of the day outside their car/train stop to walk/ride with them home.

8) Draw them a bath and tell them that you'll screen all their calls. Extra points for bath salts, candles, angelic waterfall flute music, etc.

9) Build a living room fort and play checkers/cards/music around a tea party. Tea party for the girls, fort for the boys everyone, cause it's American!

10) When their eyes are too tired to read, read their current novel aloud to them. (Or if they're like me, let them read to you!)

Flip-It Friday, Fatty

Question: How do you turn down free food or treats for someone's birthday/an office party/something thoughtfully homemade just for you when you are on a diet? How do you do it without offending the baker or the person of honor and without looking like a snob?

I'm not fat, but I am trying to fit into a wedding dress that was made quite snugly to begin with and things like The Donut Vault keep coming up. What to do!?

My Take on Bad Wedding Etiquette Comebacks

So Theknot.com just emailed me a list of ways to deflect or answer weird comments and statements made about your wedding.

Here are their answers and mine, respectively.

"Are you sure you're ready?"
Quick comeback (via theknot.com): Exude confidence and leave no room for anyone to debate if you or your fiance is in any way unprepared for what you're getting into: "Absolutely! We are completely in love and ready to be together forever."

Quicker comeback: Well, if we aren't and I end up bailing, here's my number. Call me ;)

"The marriage won't last."
Quick comeback: It's easy to get seriously offended by this one, but take the high road and try cheesy humor. Ask if their favorite precious stone is "jaded" or whether they hit any traffic on the Pessimist Expressway that morning.

Quicker comeback: I'm still not giving back the blender.

"Your engagement is too long."
Quick comeback: You have a few acceptable options: Explain that the best wedding vendors are booked more than a year in advance, that you're extending the engagement to save more money, or that you have something you want to accomplish (finish your degree, settle into a new job) before you make your marriage official.

Quicker comeback: Can we have the wedding at your house in 3 weeks then?

"Your engagement is too short."
Quick comeback: Reassure them that though your engagement is brief, you set the wedding planning wheels in motion well before he popped the question. Be calm -- if you seem too swept up in the excitement of the proposal, it supports the idea that you're rushing things.

Quicker comeback: The end of the world got moved from May 21st to July 4th. We want to go out with a bang as a married couple.

"Is that really the ring you wanted?"
Quick comeback: It's every newly engaged woman's right to show off her rock, but if you get negative vibes from someone, draw focus away from the ring with a simple reply like, "We're both really happy and excited."

Quicker comeback: You're a selfish a**hole, aren't you?

"This bridesmaid dress is ugly."
Quick comeback: Find out why she doesn't like it and try to locate some middle ground. Suggest that she stick with the dress color but then let her choose her own silhouette.

Quicker comeback: (If coming from a non-bridesmaid)- You have bad taste. (If coming from the 'maid herself)- You're just fat.

More to come later. TheKnot's post was 13 points long and I want to leave you hanging!

Flip-It Friday: Dirty Little (wedding) Secret

So I was reading on Green Wedding Shoes about this cute lil couple who wed in sunny Cali-forn-i-a.

At the end of each GWS feature wedding, the blog features a bit o' advice from the couple to help those who are still in wedding purgatory. Their advice? Gem-rific.

"The dirty little secret about wedding planning is that couples fight! I was so embarrassed and disillusioned when Nick and I disagreed on our invitations but when I confided in my friend she said, “Oh my god, we fought about everything!” I was so relieved! Planning the wedding became a great opportunity to learn more about each other and we grew as a couple in the process. So my advice is to go ahead and fight! ;)"

Ah-ha!

I may be video obsessed, but it's a good way to give you a dose of music with a dash of relevance. This one's an acoustic to not rock your world too hard in the AM. Sorry for the double AAR this week... they are just speaking to me.

So what's your wedding advice to me?

Another whiny emo song suggestion? Back Home by Yellowcard. I'm regressing in music taste this week(end).

Happy Friday. Make the most of your weekend even if that means staying in bed!
